Industrial Maintenance Technician (Cast House)

About the Role: The Cast House Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation of production machinery and supporting systems through preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. This position performs maintenance and troubleshooting on motors, electrical controls, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, mechanical assemblies, and furnace combustion systems.

Qualified Technicians must demonstrate the ability to perform intermediate-to-advanced troubleshooting of PLC-based equipment, AC/DC power circuits up to 480 VAC three-phase, and hydraulic and pneumatic circuits while maintaining strict adherence to OEM preventive maintenance standards, safety policies, and quality expectations.

Schedule: Non-Exempt, 12-Hour Schedule

• A/B Shift: Sunday - Tuesday, 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM / 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM
• C/D Shift: Wednesday - Friday, 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM / 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM
• Alternating Saturdays

Your Responsibilities:

• Follow all safety, health, and environmental procedures and protocols, including Lock-Tag-Verify/Lockout-Tagout, elevated work and fall protection, confined space entry, forklift operation, molten metal safety, and hot-work standards.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on combustion, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems as prescribed by OEM documentation and internal maintenance programs.
• Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including motors, relays, contactors, limit switches, photoeyes, sensors, and control circuits operating at 24 VDC, 120 VAC, 240 VAC, and 480 VAC three-phase.
• Diagnose and program variable-frequency drives (VFDs) and interface with PLCs, preferably Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, for basic logic adjustments and fault tracing.
• Inspect, rebuild, and align mechanical assemblies, including pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, and drive systems, to maintain design tolerances.
• Troubleshoot and service hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, including valves, regulators, cylinders, and proportional controls.
• Perform basic welding, cutting, and fabrication in support of mechanical repairs and equipment modifications.
• Utilize precision measurement tools, alignment lasers, and test instruments to ensure equipment reliability and adherence to OEM standards.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, communicate irregularities, and coordinate the resolution of abnormalities with the planning and production departments.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and assist in refining preventive maintenance programs through the analysis of equipment performance data.
• Operate heavy machinery and equipment as required, including skid steers, backhoes, telehandlers, wheel loaders, and similar equipment.
• Adhere to all safety and quality guidelines and protocols to maintain a safe working environment, including but not limited to all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements, immediate incident reporting, and adherence to both Safety Cardinal Rules and Quality Cardinal Rules, among others.
• Promote, support, and enforce Western’s Safety, Quality, Governance, regulatory, and ISO 9001 standards as they apply.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the team.

What You Will Bring:

• Minimum of 5 to 10 years of maintenance experience in a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.
• Strong working knowledge of electrical systems up to 480 VAC three-phase, including controls, sensors, motors, and power distribution.
• Proven experience troubleshooting Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs and programming VFDs.
• Ability to read, interpret, and update electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics and drawings in both American and European formats.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic systems, including proportional and directional valve assemblies.
• Experience with mechanical alignment, bearing replacement, and precision assembly techniques.
• Ability to perform welding and light fabrication for equipment restoration, repair, and improvement.
• Knowledge and understanding of plant safety systems and procedures, including Lock-Tag-Verify/Lockout-Tagout, elevated work and fall protection, confined space entry, forklift safety, molten metal safety, and hot-work authorization.
• Ability to operate heavy machinery, including skid steers, backhoes, telehandlers, wheel loaders, and similar equipment.
• Strong critical-thinking, root-cause analysis, and corrective-action skills.
• Strong attention to detail with an observant and safety-focused approach to work.
• Self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently or as part of a cross-functional team.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Word, and Teams.
• Experience in a Cast House or industrial combustion environment is preferred but not required.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to perform the Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed above.

Physical Demands: The employee in this role will primarily stand while performing assigned duties. Frequent walking, manual handling of tools and components, and use of the hands to handle and feel are required. Coordination and manual dexterity are necessary to safely operate overhead cranes, hoists, and related equipment. The employee must be able to reach with hands and arms and occasionally climb, balance, stoop, or kneel as required. The employee must be capable of regularly lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds unassisted. Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision necessary to safely perform assigned work.

Work Environment: Responsibilities are carried out in both indoor settings and in the plant, an unregulated manufacturing environment that experiences extreme temperatures and high levels of noise. The employee may be exposed to molten metal, industrial equipment, hot surfaces, and other conditions associated with Cast House operations. Some duties may also require outdoor work and exposure to varying weather conditions.
