About Torch Clean Energy
Torch Clean Energy is a leading renewable energy developer focused on accelerating the transition to a clean energy future. We specialize in the development, financing, construction and operation of utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects across the United States. At Torch, we believe our mission-driven culture, strong relationships, and nimble execution are key to our success. In January of 2025 Torch entered a joint venture partnership with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure partners to develop, construct and operate our existing pipeline of projects and to acquire additional assets prior to the start of construction.
About the Role
Torch Clean Energy is looking for an early career Field Engineer who wants to learn how utility scale solar and storage projects actually get built, from the ground up. You’ll split your time between the field and the office, supporting multiple projects through construction and into a clean handoff to our Operations team.
This is a growth role. You’ll start by learning alongside our PMs, leadership, and third party partners, and over time become the go-to person on site for how work gets done, what can go wrong, and how to keep projects moving. If you’re curious about why cables and roads are routed a certain way, how trackers and transformers work, and the details of an actual construction site, we want to talk to you.
What You’ll Do
- Support 2 to 3 projects at a time, often at different stages of construction or running in parallel
- Spend about half your time in the field, visiting sites 3 to 4 days a month to check progress, quality, and safety
- Spend the other half in the office (Boulder or Charlottesville) prepping for site visits, reviewing 3 week look aheads, and getting up to speed on upcoming field activities like PV cable termination, battery setting, and breaker installation
- Build working relationships with our third party team in the field, staying aware of contractor challenges and flagging issues early
- Inspect work for quality and alignment with drawings and technical specifications
- Reinforce safe behaviors on site and help correct unsafe conditions
- Provide clear, concise updates to PMs and leadership after each site visit
- Keep the Construction and Operations teams informed throughout each project so each is ready for a smooth handoff
- Build a deep understanding of PV, BESS, and HV systems over time
What Success Looks Like
In your first 6 months, you’ll understand construction techniques, equipment, and installation details, including why things are selected and built the way they are. You’ll be able to spot issues that could become blockers, understand how long tasks take and how many people they require, and recognize what happens when things are missed.
By the end of your first year, you’ll be a subject matter expert on what makes site work run smoothly and a trusted liaison between Torch and our EPC partner.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field (Electrical, Civil, or Construction Management also strongly considered)
- 0 to 2 years of experience, including internships or co-ops in construction, energy, or manufacturing plant environments
- Comfort working in active construction settings
- Genuine curiosity about how things get built, and motivation to learn the business
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Clear communication skills, including the confidence to ask questions and raise concerns with more experienced team members
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; exposure to project management tools is a plus
- Willingness to travel regularly, with the most frequent travel to Arizona
- Valid driver’s license (site visits involve driving from hotels to project locations)
Nice to Have
- Exposure to solar, battery storage, or electrical construction
- Familiarity with QA/QC processes
- Experience on multi-discipline projects, including student or team engineering projects
