Job Description

Timmons Group is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineering Project Manager or Senior Project Manager to join our Energy team supporting utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the electrical engineering and design of PV and BESS projects from conceptual design through issued-for-construction (IFC) documents and construction support. This position will lead teams of electrical engineers and designers, manage project staffing and resources, and ensure electrical design projects are delivered in accordance with established scope, budget, schedule, and quality requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage the electrical engineering and design of utility-scale PV and BESS projects from conceptual and preliminary design through IFC design and construction support.
  • Lead and coordinate teams of electrical engineers and designers responsible for project execution.
  • Plan project staffing, assign work, manage workloads, and coordinate internal resources to meet project schedules and deliverables.
  • Develop and manage electrical engineering scopes, budgets, schedules, work plans, and deliverable schedules.
  • Serve as the primary technical and project management point of contact for clients for electrical design projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for electrical design activities, calculations, drawings, specifications, and engineering deliverables.
  • Oversee development of PV electrical systems, including DC collection, inverter systems, AC collection, medium-voltage collection systems, grounding, communications, and associated electrical balance-of-system design.
  • Oversee development of BESS electrical systems, including battery systems, power conversion systems (PCS), transformers, switchgear, medium-voltage collection, auxiliary power, grounding, communications, and associated electrical balance-of-system design.
  • Oversee underground and overhead medium-voltage collection design, including routing, conductor and cable selection, equipment locations, pole layouts, and overhead-to-underground transitions.
  • Coordinate electrical interfaces with project substations, gen-tie facilities, utility interconnections, SCADA/communications systems, and other project infrastructure.
  • Coordinate electrical requirements with civil, structural, geotechnical, substation, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Coordinate equipment requirements and vendor information for PV inverters, BESS PCS and battery systems, transformers, switchgear, and other major electrical equipment.
  • Review and approve electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, studies, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Lead design reviews and ensure electrical designs are complete, coordinated, constructable, and compliant with applicable project requirements and standards.
  • Manage project performance against established budgets and schedules and proactively address staffing, scope, schedule, and technical issues.
  • Identify changes in project scope and support development of additional service requests and contract amendments.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to electrical engineers and designers.
  • Assist with development and implementation of electrical design standards, procedures, templates, and quality-control processes.
  • Support preparation of proposals, scopes of work, fee estimates, and project schedules for electrical engineering services.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and support business development within the solar PV and BESS markets.

Skills/Requirements of a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from an accredited engineering program.
  • Minimum of 7 years of electrical engineering experience, with progressively increasing responsibility in electrical design, technical leadership, and/or project management.
  • Demonstrated experience with electrical engineering for utility-scale solar PV, BESS, power generation, substations, or other medium- and high-voltage power systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage electrical engineering projects, including scope, budget, schedule, staffing, and technical deliverables.
  • Experience leading and coordinating teams of electrical engineers and designers.
  • Working knowledge of medium-voltage electrical systems, electrical equipment, grounding, cable and conductor systems, and power distribution.
  • Ability to review and provide technical direction on electrical calculations, one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, collection systems, grounding systems, wiring diagrams, and construction documents.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with clients, engineers, designers, equipment vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and engineering teams concurrently.
  • Ability to exercise independent technical judgment and make sound project-level decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Direct electrical engineering and project management experience with utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects.
  • Experience managing electrical design projects from conceptual engineering through IFC design and construction support.
  • Experience with 34.5 kV or similar medium-voltage collector systems.
  • Experience with underground and overhead medium-voltage systems.
  • Familiarity with PV inverters, BESS PCS equipment, battery systems, medium-voltage transformers, switchgear, substations, and utility interconnection equipment.
  • Experience with electrical system studies, including short-circuit, load flow, grounding, cable ampacity, and equipment evaluation.
  • Experience coordinating electrical designs with substation, utility interconnection, SCADA, civil, and structural engineering disciplines.
  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects and allocating engineering and design resources across a portfolio of work.
  • Experience developing electrical engineering scopes, proposals, fee estimates, and project schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop electrical engineers and designers.
