Job Summary
The Solar Permitting Specialist is responsible for managing the regulatory approval process for residential. Serving as the critical link between our engineering teams and local, state, and utility authorities, this role ensures that every project moves through the permitting pipeline accurately, compliantly, and on schedule. The ideal candidate thrives in a detail-oriented environment, communicates confidently with government agencies and internal stakeholders, and is passionate about advancing clean energy.
Duties
- Review site plans (Scope of Work) and prepare complete, accurate application packages for municipal zoning, building, and electrical permits.
- Verify that all project documentation meets local jurisdiction requirements prior to submission.
- Act as the primary point of contact with local government agencies, city planners, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Build and maintain relationships with permit offices to facilitate timely approvals and resolve issues efficiently.
- Prepare and submit interconnection applications to local utility providers.
- Track application progress and follow up proactively to secure Permission to Operate (PTO) for each project.
- Utilize CRM software to log permit statuses, milestones, and correspondence.
- Provide regular, proactive updates to Project Managers, construction teams, and customers throughout the permitting process.
- Ensure all solar system designs comply with applicable building codes, zoning ordinances, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and environmental regulations.
- Flag non-compliant designs and collaborate with engineering to resolve issues before submission.
- Identify when variance or special use permit applications are required.
- Prepare and submit supporting documentation and present cases to planning boards when necessary.
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in land use planning, construction permitting, or the renewable energy industry.
- Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local building codes, and basic solar PV system design.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; comfortable negotiating with municipalities and liaising across internal teams.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage a high volume of permits simultaneously without sacrificing accuracy.
- Proficiency in G- Suite and CRM platforms; experience with GIS or CAD software is a plus.
Pay: $50,000.00 per year
