Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent

Renewable Solar Inc (RSI) is a self-performing Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) company licensed in C-46, C-10, and General B, with a strong track record delivering solar and electrical construction projects throughout California. RSI is expanding its commercial and rooftop solar capabilities and is seeking an experienced Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent to lead field operations on the King Energy City Lights project in Bakersfield, CA.

Contract Position — Important Notice:

This is a contract position tied specifically to a project in Bakersfield, CA. Employment with RSI is for the duration of the project. Upon project completion, RSI will conduct a formal review of the Superintendent’s performance and evaluate opportunities for continued employment within the organization based on business need, project pipeline, and individual performance. Continued employment beyond project completion is not guaranteed but will be actively considered for candidates who perform at a high level.

Job Description:

We are currently looking for a Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent to lead all field operations on the commercial rooftop solar project in Bakersfield, CA. This position is responsible for the full scope of field execution: crew supervision, schedule management, safety and QC compliance, subcontractor coordination, and owner/GC interface from mobilization through final commissioning and closeout. The Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent is the senior RSI representative on the project site and is held fully accountable for what happens in the field. This role requires a proven leader with direct rooftop solar superintendent or lead foreman experience who can take ownership of a commercial solar project and deliver it safely, on schedule, and to RSI’s quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Field Operations & Crew Leadership

• Lead all field operations on the rooftop solar project from mobilization through commissioning and closeout; serve as the senior RSI field authority on site.
• Plan, schedule, and direct the daily activities of RSI’s field crew; Journeyman Electricians, Apprentices, and laborers to achieve project milestones on time and within budget.
• Set the daily work plan each morning; assign tasks, confirm materials and tools are staged, verify safety requirements are in place, and ensure all crew members understand the day’s scope before work begins.
• Monitor crew productivity throughout the day; identify and address inefficiencies, quality issues, or safety concerns in real time and escalate significant issues to the RSI Project Manager promptly.
• Coordinate subcontractor activities on site; including roofing, structural, and other trades - to ensure sequencing aligns with the solar installation schedule and that interfaces between scopes are managed cleanly.
• Maintain accurate daily field records including crew hours, tasks completed, material usage, subcontractor activity, weather conditions, and any incidents or issues; submit daily reports to the RSI Project Manager.

Rooftop Solar Installation Oversight

• Oversee all rooftop solar installation scope including racking and mounting system installation, module installation and stringing, DC wiring and combiner connections, AC wiring, inverter and electrical equipment installation, and utility interconnection preparation.
• Ensure all installation work is performed in strict accordance with project plans, specifications, manufacturer installation requirements, NEC, and applicable local building and electrical codes.
• Coordinate with the structural and roofing trades on penetration locations, flashing, and weatherproofing to ensure the rooftop system is installed without compromising roof integrity; this is a critical quality checkpoint on every rooftop solar project.
• Oversee the installation of fall protection systems, guardrails, and all rooftop safety infrastructure required by OSHA and the project-specific safety plan prior to crew access.
• Conduct and document pre-installation inspections, in-progress QC checks, and final walk inspections at each project phase; ensure punch list items are tracked and closed before milestone sign-off.

Safety

• Own safety on the project site — the Superintendent is the primary safety authority on the project and is held accountable for the safety culture, PPE compliance, fall protection, and safe work practices of all RSI personnel and subcontractors on site.
• Implement the project Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) in coordination with RSI’s Safety & Compliance Manager prior to mobilization; ensure all crew members and subcontractors review and acknowledge the SSSP before beginning work.
• Conduct and document daily job site safety inspections; identify and correct hazards immediately. Maintain written inspection records and submit to RSI’s Safety & Compliance Manager weekly.
• Prepare and review Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) with the crew before starting new scopes, rooftop access, elevated work, and any other high-risk tasks.
• Enforce fall protection requirements at all times on the rooftop.
• Enforce RSI’s “Stop the Work” authority; immediately halt any operation presenting an imminent safety hazard and notify the RSI Project Manager and Safety & Compliance Manager.
• Immediately report all incidents, near misses, injuries, and property damage to the RSI Project Manager and Safety & Compliance Manager.
• Maintain current OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification as a condition of employment in this role.

Owner, GC & Client Interface

• Serve as RSI’s primary field representative in daily interface with the King Energy project team, building owner representatives, and any GC or construction manager on site; represent RSI professionally and maintain a positive, solutions-oriented working relationship.
• Participate in project meetings, progress walks, and milestone inspections as requested by the owner or project team; provide accurate field status updates and flag scope, schedule, or quality issues before they become disputes.
• Manage the field-level RFI and submittal process — identify field conditions that require clarification, document them accurately, and coordinate with the RSI Project Manager on resolution; do not proceed with ambiguous scope without written direction.
• Coordinate with the local utility and building department on inspection scheduling, required field observations, and permit compliance; ensure all inspections are scheduled and passed on time.

Schedule & Cost

• Maintain the project field schedule; identify risks to milestone dates early and communicate to the RSI Project Manager with a recommended mitigation plan, not just the problem.
• Monitor daily labor productivity against the project budget; flag variances to the RSI Project Manager promptly so cost issues can be addressed before they compound.
• Manage material consumption and waste on site; coordinate with the RSI Operations and Logistics Department on material deliveries, confirm staging locations, and report shortages or delivery issues with sufficient lead time to prevent field delays.

Work Conditions:

• This position is based full-time at the project site in Bakersfield, CA for the duration of the project. On-site presence during all working hours is required.
• Work is performed on commercial rooftops and in outdoor environments in all weather conditions. Bakersfield summer temperatures regularly exceed 105°F — heat illness prevention protocols are in effect and enforced.
• Must be physically capable of regular rooftop access including ladder climbing, working on sloped and flat roof surfaces, carrying materials, and wearing full PPE including fall protection harness for the duration of rooftop work.
• Standard schedule is Monday–Friday with availability for extended hours and weekend work during critical schedule phases or commissioning activities.
• Must wear and work in all required PPE for the full duration of the work shift including fall protection harness on all rooftop work.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Minimum 5 years of solar construction experience with at least 2 years in a Site Superintendent or Lead Foreman role on commercial or industrial rooftop solar projects; rooftop solar superintendent experience is required — ground-mount-only experience does not satisfy this requirement.
• Demonstrated experience managing a full commercial rooftop solar project from mobilization through commissioning as the senior field supervisor.
• Strong working knowledge of rooftop solar racking systems, module installation, DC and AC electrical systems, inverter installation, and utility interconnection requirements.
• Thorough knowledge of rooftop-specific safety requirements — fall protection systems, roof penetration and weatherproofing coordination, and heat illness prevention.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification required and must be current within 5 years.
• Experience with commercial rooftop commissioning including inverter startup, string testing, irradiance verification, and production monitoring system setup.
• Experience interfacing with building owners, GCs, utilities, and building departments on commercial solar projects.
• Proficiency with project management and field coordination tools — Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, or equivalent.
• Valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Supervisory Controls

The Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent reports directly to the Field Operations Manager, but during the course of the project will report to the RSI Project Manager. Project superintendents are non-supervisory but have tactical day-to-day oversight of RSI personnel (crews) and subcontractors actively working on their respective job sites.  Project Superintendents receive support from RSI Construction Management Team in the form of personnel, equipment, and materials - with the Field Operations Manager and Electrical Division Manager retaining supervisory responsibility for the crew personnel. 

Evaluation Factors

The Rooftop Solar Site Superintendent will be evaluated on project schedule performance against the project milestones, safety record (zero recordable incidents, full fall protection compliance), quality of installation and QC documentation, client and owner relationship management, accuracy and timeliness of daily field reporting, labor productivity against budget, and effectiveness of crew and subcontractor coordination. End-of-project performance evaluation will be the primary factor in RSI’s determination of continued employment opportunities following project completion.

Pay Scale

$110,000 – $130,000 annually, commensurate with rooftop solar superintendent experience and demonstrated project history. This is a contract position for the duration of the project. Upon successful project completion, RSI will conduct a formal performance review and evaluate opportunities for continued employment within the organization based on business need and individual performance.

Required travel: Project site based — Bakersfield, CA. Full-time on-site presence required for project duration.
